Riding out with the Hero

The Hero is a unique little video camera, formally known as the GoPro Hero HD. It shoots 1080p, and has become a favorite camera for adventurers. Just take a look at some of the videos on the GoPro web site.

I am continuing to experiment with video and still photography, and if I get a chance to combine that with motorcycling, well, it just makes it better.

So the weather looked great, and I decided to go for a ride and see some of the sights along the way. Primarily, my mission in this short ride was to combine video with still photography. Here is the final version for my experiment.

See you on the highway.

Photo tip to produce fisheye landscapes

Fine Art Friday

One of the reasons I bought the Canon 5D MkII was to have full use of all my lenses with that full-frame sensor. I have tried most of my lenses on the camera, but I really hadn’t played with the 15mm/2.8 Fisheye Lens. A full frame gives you the widest palette for this lens. With the 15 on the 5D, I headed out to shoot some landscapes.

Here’s a few tips for how to use this lens or one like it.

Travel tips for writers and photographers

Historic Highways

I should not have been surprised, but  I was. I received quite a few comments, all positive, about the most recent Studio News. And, what was it about? It was about discovering the hundreds of historic highways of our nation. If you did not get your copy of the Studio News, you can view it here. Subscribe to get your own copy. You have complete control to opt in or out. But frankly, I hope you subscribe and stay awhile.

See you on the highway.

Holding off to the last minute on Valentine’s Day

I shopped early because my valentine was leaving town on business. So we had an early Valentine’s Day. I was surprised though to learn how many wait until the last minute to think of Valentine’s Day.

valentine

Needing a few groceries, I headed up to the local grocery store, which was very well stocked for those last minute shoppers—mostly men, but not all. The number of men walking around with bunches of flowers resembled fans headed to the hot dog and beer stand at the ball park between innings. Everyone was in a hurry and on a mission.

Floral department staff was tripled for this day, ladies helping men pick out bouquets of roses, pink carnations, or daisies, although I can’t imagine anybody buying anything other than red roses on this day. The Hallmark Valentine’s Day card display had been moved to the floral department making it a one-stop shopping. Racks of wine stood at the ready nearby. The bakery department had an assortment of cakes and cupcakes decorated with red, white and pink frosting or decorated with red hearts.

Yes, it’s a busy day for men to do the right thing on Valentine’s Day to show your loved one how much you care. I bought my roses five days ago so they could be enjoyed by my love before departing on her business trip. She took a single rose with her. After she left, I found a Valentine’s Day card under my pillow on the bed.

I hope your Valentine’s Day is a blessed one with lots of love. If you are really lucky, as I am, you will know Valentine’s Day every day of the year.

Finding your muse on two wheels

MC-ride-13Feb2011-1

I have always thought of a muse as being a person—someone who inspires you to do better, to put forth the effort, or help you find that creativity that allows you to weigh anchor and sail forth. I never thought of a muse in terms of gender. But, I am finding otherwise, and experiencing something different.

The New Oxford American Dictionary, 3rd Edition cites Muse as a noun, from Greek and Roman mythology:

    • each of nine goddesses, the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, who preside over the arts and sciences, (each of the Muses and their respective areas of arts and culture are identified)
    • (muse) a woman or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist.

My wife inspires me. My friends inspire me from time to time. And surprisingly, I find inspiration and creativity while on the motorcycle. It’s like the creative juices will start to flow while I am riding. Some of my best ideas come while riding. And … some of my best ideas come and go while riding because I didn’t write them down.

While out riding today, a balmy February day, it dawned on me that the motorcycle is my muse. I can’t explain how a machine, which has no gender, is only metal, plastic and rubber, can inspire me, but it’s true. Creativity and inspiration come while motorcycling, as if a muse was speaking softly in my ear.

Oh dear muse, how I long to receive your precious inspiration, to feel the creativity pulsing through my veins, to turn our time together into works of art.

Well … it’s a poetic thought. Who (or what) is your muse?
